BAFTA, Directors UK to Debate 'The Future Of Shooting With Film ...

LONDON ? The British Academy of Film and Television Arts and Directors U.K., the fee-collecting and lobbying group for British movie and television directors are partnering to host a debate on the future of shooting on film.

The event is being produced by director Iain Softley (The Skeleton Key) is producing and will also host the event with panellists including Oscar winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald and cinematographer John Mathieson (Gladiator).

Softley, wearing his Directors U.K. Film committee chair hat said: "During the production of my last film Trap for Cinderella, I frequently came across the view that the change to shooting on digital as opposed to film was inevitable and resistance was futile."

Softley notes that there is a "wider assumption that digital is modern and therefore technically superior and cheaper."

He added: "It is clear from talking to a broad range of people in all areas of the film industry that the case is far from proven and the facts have not been thoroughly examined."

The debate is scheduled to rage Nov. 13 at BAFTA's central London headquarters.
